Social Media Marketing Free E-Course – Part 2 Twitter

OK, so you want to start “tweeting,” as they say. Or maybe you don’t really want to but everyone keeps telling you that you should. Or maybe you are being dragged kicking and screaming to Twitter. For whatever reason you are here to learn about this thing they call Twitter.

Before you go about setting up your Twitter account and start tweeting you need to have some sort of overall strategy. What are you going to tweet about? What should your Twitter user name be? Go and figure that out, I’ll wait. If you’re having trouble with those questions give us a call at (828) 367-0488 or email us.

Now that’s all sorted out, let’s just jump right in. Go to twitter.com and you’ll see this:

If you want to just look around and check out what’s happening on Twitter, you can search using the search tool:

Just type in a subject and you’ll see what’s being said about that subject in real time all over the world. You don’t have to have an account to check it out.

The power of Twitter is pretty amazing. From what I’ve heard the death of Osama bin Ladin first broke on Twitter. I happened to be on Twitter at the time and saw the tweets about it. This was about an hour or so before President Obama did his press conference.

After you join you will be asked for a bit more information.

You will be asked for a Twitter username. If your name is already taken, which it probably will be unless you are the only one in the world with that name, you might want to pick a name that tells a bit about what you will be tweeting about. That name may also be taken so you might want to add a “1” or some other character after your chosen username.

Continue on and you will be asked for your interests so that you can find some people you might want to follow.

You can find friends that are already using Twitter by accessing your email account(s).

If you find friends, you can follow them right away if you want to. They may even follow you back.

Next you’ll want to add a bit more to your “profile.” In your bio mention a bit about what you will be tweeting about. Also add a picture. You CAN use a graphic of some sort but I recommend using a real picture as it adds authenticity to your profile.

You can (and should) add a link to your website here. If you don’t yet have a website, call us immediately at (828) 367-0488 to quickly and efficiently rectify that serious situation.

Your profile will look something like this until you start following people and tweeting.

Now you are ready to start tweeting. Just type your message right in the box under where it says “What’s happening?”

Tweet away, and have fun.

There are other things you can do to tweak your profile and ways to rapidly build your followers list, but these are the basics of how to get going on Twitter.
